What Is a RateCon — and Why You Should Never Run a Load Without One
In this industry, your truck isn’t the only thing that keeps the wheels turning. Paperwork protects your paycheck — and when it comes to hauling freight, the RateCon (short for Rate Confirmation) is one of the most important documents in the game.

🚛 What Is a RateCon?
A Rate Confirmation is a written agreement between the freight broker and the carrier that spells out all the key details of a load. It’s your proof of what was promised — in writing — and what you’re getting paid to do.
You’ll typically find info like:
📍 Pickup and delivery addresses
📆 Appointment windows and deadlines
💵 The agreed rate for the load
➕ Any accessorial pay (fuel surcharge, layover, detention, etc.)
⚠️ Special instructions (like hazmat, temperature control, liftgate needs)
☎️ Broker contact info
Once both parties sign off, it becomes the binding agreement for that load.
🛑 Why It Matters: No RateCon, No Load
We’ve seen it happen too many times — a driver gets verbal confirmation, hits the road, and then gets shorted on the rate… or worse, doesn’t get paid at all. Without a signed RateCon, you have no leverage.
Here’s why you should always get it in writing:
✅ 1. It Protects Your Paycheck
No matter how friendly or trustworthy the broker seems on the phone — you can’t deposit a handshake.
✅ 2. It Clarifies All the Details
A phone call might miss key info. The RateCon confirms everything — so you’re not caught off guard mid-trip.
✅ 3. It Covers Extras
Accessorials like detention and layover should be listed. If not — ask before you move.
✅ 4. It’s a Legal Safety Net
If there’s ever a dispute or legal issue, the RateCon is your backup. No guesswork — just proof.
🔍 Quick Tip
Don’t rush to sign. Double-check the RateCon matches what was discussed:
Is the rate correct?
Are your pick-up and delivery times doable?
Are accessorials clearly listed?
If anything looks off, speak up — before wheels roll.
Final Thoughts
The RateCon isn’t just paperwork — it’s your protection, your power, and your proof. Whether you’re a brand-new carrier or running a growing fleet, don’t move a load without it.
In this business, clarity is currency. Protect your time, your truck, and your bottom line — and always get it in writing.
