What Should Truckers Know About Their Dispatcher?

Alright, let’s be real—your dispatcher can make or break your day. Some are great, some are... well, let’s just say “less than great.” Either way, you’ve gotta deal with them, so here are three things every trucker should know about their dispatcher:

1. They Control Your Loads—So Don’t Be a Pain

Like it or not, your dispatcher is the one lining up your loads. If they like you, you’ll stay busy with good-paying runs. If you’re constantly complaining, late, or just plain difficult, don’t be surprised when you start getting bottom-of-the-barrel loads. You don’t have to be best friends, but keeping things professional (and not blowing up their phone over every little thing) goes a long way.

2. If You Don’t Communicate, You’re Gonna Have Problems

Dispatchers aren’t mind-readers. If you need home time, if your truck’s giving you trouble, or if you’re running behind, tell them. Nobody likes surprises, especially when there’s a load on the line. At the same time, they should be keeping you updated too—if they’re leaving you in the dark all the time, that’s a red flag.

3. They’re Dealing with Brokers & Shippers, So You Don’t Have To

Ever had to argue with a broker over detention pay or deal with a shipper who acts like they’re doing you a favor by letting you haul their freight? Yeah, dispatch handles a lot of that mess. A good one will fight to get you the best loads and make sure you’re paid fairly. A bad one? They’ll throw you whatever’s easy and call it a day.

At the end of the day, you and your dispatcher are a team. If you make their life easier, they’ll usually do the same for you. Keep it professional, communicate, and don’t burn bridges—because trust me, you’ll need them more than they need you.
